While in Miami last weekend, coming out of a vegan restaurant, two guys approached my friend and I and asked how the restaurant was…no doubt this was a pick up line; they didn’t succeed in the actual pick up, but they did succeed in giving us some powerful information in the short 15-minute conversation, which we both appreciated.

During my conversation, the guy I spoke to (let’s call him Zack) told me to do a 48-hour water cleanse.  I actually never thought of doing a water cleanse.  I’ve done juice cleanses, raw food cleanses and a combination of both but never a water cleanse.  Zack told me that a water cleanse would bring me clarity, energy, clean organs (detox), boost my immune system, increase my libido (we know where he was going with this one), normalize my blood sugar, and potentially lose 1 lb of fat each day, while on the cleanse.  He rattled these benefits off like he studied them.  I was actually impressed with our short conversation; he continued to tell me that 48 hours is the best time frame because it’s not too short and not too long.  I came back from Miami curious and started looking up water cleanses and sure enough all of the benefits he spoke about seem to be true.

It’s pre-summer where I live and during this time, it is common to hear about detoxes and cleanses.  With the vast amount of information available on detoxes and cleanses, it is difficult to figure out what kind, how long, and which one to choose.  I am an advocate for doing a cleanse only if you feel you need a re-boot your organs, need clarity and need an energy boost from a possible prolonged winter.  I do not recommend cleanses to treat any type of condition.  An important question to ask when deciding to do a cleanse is “Why am I doing it?” If you feel crummy from having the winter blues, then perhaps a cleanse is in order; if not, perhaps, there is no reason to do it. It’s important to remember that all bodies are different and what one person can tolerate another cannot.  Know your body and know what it can take.  If you start a cleanse and you feel something isn’t right, stop the cleanse.  If you start a cleanse and you feel great, continue.

If you’ve never done a cleanse, I recommend doing a cleanse that involves food.  An example of this type of cleanse would be a ‘green food cleanse’.  A green food cleanse consists of only eating green vegetables and fruit (a possible green apple in between).  A green diet consist of eating leafy greens, spinach, kale, cucumbers, avocado, green onions, cilantro, parsley, oregano, and any other vegetable that’s green.  You can eat them alone or combine them in a delicious salad.  Don’t follow the craze, follow your intuition and do what’s best for you.  The journey is YOURS!
